Our First Garden!!

Back in April, we decided to try our hands at our very first vegetable garden. This is a huge feat, because I literally kill ALL plants. I was just not blessed with a green thumb. But, we still wanted to give it a shot!!

So, after it rained for 9 straight days in April (remember that??), we began air-raiding and tilling up a little plot of land behind our fence:

The girls did a great job of helping out, but they were a bit more interested in "finding critters."

Still, they weren't afraid to get their hands dirty and help us plant our seedlings:

We worked on it a little after school each day and watched it grow, and of course, we had to add a scarecrow!!! Her name is Sally.

Getting a little bigger.....

Finally beginning to bloom and produce. Here's our very first squash bloom:

Daddy has loved all of those jalapeños!!

Our bell peppers did the best out of all of the plants. We have more peppers than we know what to do with!!! Anyone have bell pepper recipes??

We currently have 17 green tomatoes on the vines. Can't wait to fry them up!!

We also have many baby watermelons and cantaloupes!!

Our very first "harvest" was a banana pepper. I was so very proud of it:

And we've been pickin' ever since!!!

It's been so neat to go out in the yard to get dinner!! I have made some KILLER squash and zucchini casseroles:

Also, some "BLT" salads (but instead of lettuce, we use cucumbers). Mmmmmmm.

Cantaloupe smiles for breakfast!!

It has been such a fun experience to have our own garden, and we hope to keep it going and make it a bit bigger in the coming months. We tried to keep it small this first go around, because honestly, we had NO IDEA what we were doing!! The girls are wanting to plant our own pumpkins for the fall, so we'll see if we can pull that off. :)
